Valongo
Description
Chapel of N. Sra. dos Chãos, Windmill and Viewpoint

The Hermitage was built by the sailor Tomé António, as payment of a promise to the Virgin, after escaping from a sea storm. It was built in 1625, having a rectangular floor plan, a single nave and a gabled roof with a cross and pinnacles. The granitic structure is whitewashed. The main façade has a glazed window door, which is flanked by two windows. The Nossa Senhora dos Chãos festivities take place on the first weekend of September. The procession follows from the parish church to the hermitage, on Sunday morning. The ruins of an old windmill are found in the surroundings. The extraordinary landscape that surround the cities and the region of Valongo and Porto, as well as the Atlantic, can be seen from here.
