Chapel and Stone Cross (crucifix) of "Branda"

Arcos de Valdevez
Description
Located in the main Square of “Branda”, the chapel dedicated to “S. Bento” (S. Benedict) going by the same name, includes, likewise, a pilgrims shelter, forming a small mountain shrine of pilgrimage; probable from medieval origin but a modern tradition, well integrated in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is characterized by a sole rectangular nave, with the sacristy of the same morphology attached on the top to the east wall; including also a bell tower.

Close to this religious area, occupying a small space on the extremity of the “Branda”’s square, exist a granite made cross (crucifix) probably dating back to the early 19th century, with a simple inscription on east and south side. It features a smooth shaft column incorporating a sculpted image of “S. Bento”, framed in a small niche. The stone made cross (crucifix) supported by a column, is a Latin cross (crucifix) presenting a sculpted representation of Christ.
