Couço of Monte Furado

Vila Nova de Cerveira
Description

Located at the base of steep slope, on meander of the Coura River, the Couço of Monte Furado is a mining complex of the Roman time composed of tunnel excavated in outcrop destined to divert the river. To half height of the tunnel is possible to distinguish excavated niches for the placing of lighting. At the exit of the tunnel there are two tanks, on the rock excavated, placed contiguously to a small gap between them, for decantation. The water would be diverted with the aid of a small dam located upstream, and conducted by a canal to the entrance of the tunnel. Thus it was possible to remove all the auriferous sands of the riverbed, with special attention to the Poço de Cabaninhas, situated on the riverbed with 12m depth, and decanting to remove the existing elements in the waters.
