The PEPE`s history begins in 1928 when José Augusto Júnior started to manufacture paper and wood toys. In 1930 he built a factory and became the first person to make a metallic ribbon rope toy in Portugal. In 1946 he created the toy factory “Industrial de Quinquilharias de Ermesinde”. In 1955, a new name was given to the factory “JATO”, having 80 employees working. It was one of the largest factories in Portugal. At this time the plastic material was already used. Under the direction of his sons, a new brand "PEPE" was created in the 70s, producing plastic toys. European safety regulations prevented many of the old toys to continue to be marketable as toys, being now greatly appreciated as collection pieces.
