Historic Centre

Barcelos
Description
From the Historic Centre it stands out the Medieval Bridge, the Largo do Apoio, Rua D. António Barroso and Largo da Porta Nova. For centuries, the medieval bridge was the only safe crossing to pass through Cávado. The visitor who arrived to Barcelos from Barcelinhos, could see several monuments like the Paço dos Condes, Solar dos Pinheiros, Igreja Matriz and Paços do Municipio, and then through narrow streets get to the Largo do Apoio, the heart of the medieval village.
There was a Condal residence from the 14th century, that today it is known as the House of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira.
Then through the Rua S. Francisco and Rua D. António Barroso, you arrive at the Largo da Porta Nova, the civic centre of Barcelos. This place became the centre of the city in the 17th or 18th century, after the Miracle of the Crosses. There you can see a remarkable set of buildings of Baroque style, in particular, the Temple of the Senhor da Cruz and the Garden of the Barrocas. Before them it stands the Campo da Feira, the economic engine of the region.
