Monastery of S. Martinho de Crasto

Ponte da Barca
Description
The Monastery of S. Martinho de Crasto, in Romanesque style, was built in the early XII century and was delivered in 1136 to the Canons Regular of St. Augustine. From the ancient monastery only the church remains, of rectangular drawing topped by a bell tower, and the brother’s rooms, which form a square and where we can find a cross stone. The sculptural decoration of the modillions – the tower, the nave and the apse – arouses curiosity by its themes: human and animal figures criticizing vices, entwined snakes, and geometric ornaments, among many others. Classified as a national monument, the church of S. Martinho de Crasto is perfectly framed in the landscape of Vade Valley.
