THE HERMITAGE OR SANCTUARY
The Sanctuary of S. Salvador do Mundo is part of a set of chapels built from the final of the sixteenth century, disposed from the bottom to the top of the Hermitage, and they are kind of stations of painful route, evoking steps of Jesus in Jerusalem on the way to Calvary. The chapels have inside polychromed sculptures (almost natural size), representing scenes from the Passion of Christ. On Corpus Christi`s day it happens the traditional and crowded pilgrimage to San Salvador, the largest in the region.
THE BELVEDERE
Because of the fantastic view over the Douro River and the Valeira dam, the Sanctuary of S. Salvador do Mundo is also used as a fantastic viewpoint, one of the most famous of Douro, where it is possible to glimpse a view dominated by the Douro River, although it is also subject of interest the vineyard in modern level. In one of the Douro River slopes passes the famous Douro Railway Track. In that same slope, where it seems impossible to man circulate, you can see terraces with stone walls, now abandoned and covered of mediterranean bush. The incline of this hillside is absolutely amazing and the terraces cover it from the geodesic mark of Cevadeira until near the Railroad line.
This is an outdoor space and can be visited at any time of the day without the need to reserve.
