The “Soajo”’s Pillory

Arcos de Valdevez
Description
A National Monument since 1910, the “Soajo”’s pillory is a simple prop up, clogged with an anthropomorphic face and a triangle at its top, evoking a three-cornered hat. The date of its construction is uncertain, even though a charter given to the village by King D. Manuel in 1514 was meant to launch its construction, beginning its judicial milestone functionality. Some authors interpret its sculptural elements as part of local administrative autonomy and political traditions, but no reading is in this context is accurate enough. The fact of not having any slot placement of irons is touted as justification for its late construction.
