Traditional fishing traps

Melgaço
Description
When looking at them, the fishing traps look like natural hindrances against which the Minho river fiercely beats leaving foam behind it. They had already been referred to in the XIth century in donations to monasteries and vicar of Tuy.  Centuries years old, or even millenary, the fishing traps of the Minho river are considered as a cultural heritage. They belong to the landscape legacy of the riverside. They testify the ancestral knowledge to choose the best places to set up a trap, as well as the orientation given according to the stream of the river, the work done on the crag to build the walls, the choice of the most appropriate fishing method and the communitarian sharing system.
